Ticonderoga firefighter ( AVFBA Member ) springs into action saving woman from fire

TICONDEROGA — A Ticonderoga woman suffered second- and first-degree burns Wednesday in a fire at 895 Route 9N.

Ticonderoga First Assistant Fire Chief William Norton was working across the street when he saw flames and smoke coming out of the building around 7:28 a.m.

He responded immediately, hitting the fire with an extinguisher and helping Kimberlee Burgey out of the building.

Burgey, the sole resident in apartment No. 1, was taken by ambulance to the University of Vermont Health Network, Moses Ludington Hospital for burns on her legs, foot, arm and hand, Ticonderoga Volunteer Fire Department Chief Matt Watts said.

Hospital officials said later in the day that she wasn't there and wouldn't confirm whether she had been treated there, however.

Burgey and two other tenants, who live downstairs in apartment No. 2, have been displaced by the fire, Watts said.

The chief didn’t know the other tenants' names. All three are staying with family members until an inspection of the electrical system is completed and the smoke damage from the fire is cleaned up, he said.

The cause of the blaze was still under investigation, but it appeared to have been electrical, Watts said.

An outlet and one wall in the upstairs apartment was damaged.

He and the rest of his crew joined Norton at the building, airing it out when they arrived.

They were back in service by 9 a.m.

The building is owned by Kevin Reyor of Port Henry, according to Essex County Real Property records.

The property is insured, but the tenants are not, Watts said.

“We really recommend people getting renters insurance,” he said.

“It’s so cheap, and we often times go to places where people don’t have renters insurance because they think the person who owns the building’s insurance is going to cover things.

“It doesn’t cover their personal belongings such as computers, clothes and TVs.”
